What foods can actually reduce teeth staining?

It may be surprising to know, but certain foods can actually help reduce staining of teeth! If you love fruits and vegetables, you are in luck.  Some of the harder varieties will actually gently scrub your teeth as you chew them and also make your mouth produce more saliva, which will neutralize acid and clean your mouth while you eat. So enjoy that salad and help keep a white, stain-free smile 😉

here is a list of teeth stain-fighting foods:

  • Apples – preferably the harder varieties like granny smith
  • Carrots – baby or regular
  • Celery stalks
  • Cauliflower
  • hard cheese

Tooth Abscess

What is a tooth abscess?

It is an area of infection due to a bacterial infection in the inside of your tooth.

What are it’s Causes?

A tooth abscess can be triggered by tooth decay or a result of trauma (such as a break or chip) to your tooth. Any opening in your tooth’s enamel may allow bacteria to go into the center of your tooth. This infection, if left unchecked, can spread into the root of your tooth or to the surrounding bones.

You can experience swelling that can be painful on your gums or a toothache. The toothache can start out as a slow ache and develop to a severe throbbing or sharp shooting pain. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, please give our office a call!

What is toothpaste made of?

We use it every day and conveniently just squeeze it out of its tube, but toothpaste is made of a variety of different components all ensuring a clean and safe cleanser for your teeth.

So what’s it made of?

About 20-42% of toothpaste is actually water. There are also three main components other than water that do all the hard work, they are: detergents, abrasives and fluoride.

Abrasives

50% of most toothpastes are composed of abrasives. Their main job is to help remove plaque from your teeth and minimize the risk of cavities and gum disease.

Fluorides

Preventing cavities is fluoride’s primary job but it is also good for bones and tooth enamel. Fluoride can be found in some plants, animals, and water.

Detergents

Many toothpastes have detergents in them – they are similar to those found in other products including shampoo! The foaming action of toothpaste is attributed to these detergents.

Other components

  • antibacterial agents
  • flavors
  • remineralizers
  • sugar alcohols

How to choose a great dentist in Philadelphia

Many people are faced with finding a new dentist for their routine oral care when moving to a new location. If you are used to your primary dentist and happy with his or her service, you may feel it is an impossible task to find a new dentist. Here are a few pointers to help:

1. Ask friends or relatives who might live in the area for recommendations
2. Search on the internet for reviews from patients. It is easy to be swayed by a dentist’s website but usually the best information comes from patients themselves.
3. Visit a few locations and ask if you can have information about the practice. The staff at a dentist’s office should be helpful in providing you with any information about hours, insurance, dental equipment and services as well as a history of the dentists who are at the practice. Always look for a clean, well-run office with modern equipment.
4. Ask about emergency hours and any extra services that may be convenient

For new patients in the Center City Philadelphia area looking for an experienced dentist, please consider Dr. Eidelson. Make sure when choosing a cosmetic dentist that he/she is thoroughly trained, certified and up-to-date on any of the products that they offer.
